How much yarn does it take to make a scarf?

I was just wondering......

It depends on the weight of yarn and how big you want your scarf - here is some information that might help.

If you are using yarn that yields 4 stitches per inch you would need 170 yds for a 6" x 40" scarf, but for a 10" x 60" scarf you would need around 400 yards.

If you are using yarn that yields 5 stitches per inch you would need 200 yds for a 6" x 40" scarf, but for a 10" x 60" scarf you would need around 500 yards.

If you are using yarn that yields 6 stitches per inch you would need 300 yds for a 6" x 40" scarf, but for a 10" x 60" scarf you would need around 700 yards.

I hope you find this helpful next time you are picking out yarn for a scarf.
