How much yarn does it take to make a scarf?

I was just wondering......

It depends on the weight of yarn and how big you want your scarf - here is some information that might help.

If you are using yarn that yields 4 stitches per inch you would need 170 yds for a 6" x 40" scarf, but for a 10" x 60" scarf you would need around 400 yards.

If you are using yarn that yields 5 stitches per inch you would need 200 yds for a 6" x 40" scarf, but for a 10" x 60" scarf you would need around 500 yards.

If you are using yarn that yields 6 stitches per inch you would need 300 yds for a 6" x 40" scarf, but for a 10" x 60" scarf you would need around 700 yards.

I hope you find this helpful next time you are picking out yarn for a scarf.

Look at this beauty!

Great American Afghan by Ann

Look at the beautiful blanket (to be) that Ann knit.  This is 24 of her 25 squares, her last one is in the works.  Her next step will be putting them all together.
We have another class starting up in August.  You too can make this beautiful afghan.  You will learn many different techniques and come out with a beautiful blanket.
Ann, Pam and Nancy have worked diligently these last 25 months to knit this afghan.  Congratulations to you three, it's been a joy teaching the class.  More pics to come.

Have you tried the Pinch Method?

The Pinch Method is a method you can use when you knit cables without a cable needle.

To try this method take the stitches that would normally go on a cable needle and pinch them together with your fingers when you take them off the needle.
Now hold those stitches to the front or back according to the pattern as you work the stitches from the regular needle.  Replace the pinched to the left needle, then knit them off.
Start with a 2 stitch cable and work up to a four stitch cable.
I know it sounds scary, but give it a try, you might like it.

This tip is from the book Power Cables by Lily Chin.  This book not only teaches you about cables and how they form and how to do reversible cables, it also has good picture support.  From cable casting on to short rows and mattress stitch.

Embossed Rib

It is always fun to incorporate new stitches into your knitting. The embossed rib pattern is a series of four rows of stitches that create a ribbing pattern. It works well for projects like sweaters or socks. It is a rather complex pattern that will take some time to memorize, so you may want to keep written instructions close by while creating a sample swatch. Read on to learn how to knit an embossed rib pattern.

If you haven't tried Queensland Sugar Rush, this would be a great yarn to knit a pattern on, it has such great stitch definition.  Sugar Rush is 100% Sugar Cane Viscose.

Embossed Rib Pattern
Row 1:  (right side): P2, *K1 through back loop, K1,P1,K1 through back loop, P2: rep from * to end.
Row 2:  K2, *P1 through back loop, K1 P1, P1 through the back loop, K2; rep from * to end.
Row 3:  P2, *K1 through back loop, P1,K1,K1 through back loop, P2; rep from* rep from * to end
Row 4:  K2, *P1 through back loop, P1,K1,P1 through back loop, K2, rep from * to end.

Rep these 4 rows.
You will want to do this pattern in multiples of 6 + 2
